Apple Announces New iPad

by Lori Cunningham

Today Apple announced its newest, long anticipated and highly gossiped product, the Apple iPad. Rumors about the new iPad have been running rampant on the Internet as Apple fans and technology commentators quickly spread any gossip to help satisfy curious and die hard Apple fans.

Steve Jobs presented the new Apple iPad to a packed room full in San Francisco. Reporters hung on every Steve Job's every word. Steve Jobs heralded the new iPad as "phenomenal," "unbelievably great," and "way better than a laptop, way better than a smartphone."

The iPad is only 1.5 lbs, a half inch think, WiFi capable, and has a 9.7 inch screen. With all of it's capabilities, the iPad is surprisingly affordable. It is available in either a 16 gb of flash storage ($499), 32 GB ($599), or 64 gb storage ($699). Later, Apple will add 3G to the iPad which will ad an extra $130 to the price. The battery is estimated to last 10 hours.

What Can You Do with the Apple iPad?

o  Read- it is an ebook - displaying books, magazines, and newspapers -- in color

o  Write - emails on a pop up touch keyboard

o  Surf - the Internet comfortably and with the ability to see a full screen view of a web page

o  Keep your Calendar - track all your appointments

o  Showcase your Pictures- in true Apple form, flip through your pictures, enlarge them with your fingers, change their orientation just by rotating the iPad, set slideshows to music, etc. In addition, you can use the iPad as a digital picture frame when it is sitting in its docking station. Pictures can be imported, sync'd with your computer, downloaded from e-mail, or uploaded from your camera via the Apple Camera Connection kit.

o  Watch Videos- YouTube, TV shows, music videos, podcasts, you name it

o  Store Your Contacts - and click on "map" to find their addresses

o Search Maps - to find business close to your location. Street level views are available from Google, giving an incredible view of the business/address you are looking for.

What Content Can You Get for the iPad?

Many of the apps available in Apple's App store is available for the iPad. The iPad includes an iPod and music can be downloaded from iTunes. A new storefront called iBook will allow you to browse for books and magazines to download.

A Mom's Perspective

Steve Jobs believes the new iPad is "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smartphone." The iPad does seem to bring about a closeness to a person's online experience as the device is small, lightweight, and is all finger controlled. It's very much like using the iPhone, just amplified in size.

I would liken the iPad to a netbook and eReader, only more convenient due to its touch and orientation manipulation. The iPad ties up a lot of neat features in this bundle that make it very enticing. However, on the flip side, there are some visible oversights that are important to note if you're thinking the iPad will act as your new netbook. Specifically, the iPad does not include:

o  multi-tasking capabilities

o  a file manager to manage your files

o  GPS - so you still need to cart around your GPS during travel

Apple is prepared an open development kit for the iPad, just as it did for the iPhone. Expect many new apps to be developed in the future. I also see the iPad as a very instrumental remote for future apps to help you control your music, movies, pictures, lighting, and numerous to personalize your home.

CES 2010: Great Technology Products for Moms

OK, after five days at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, I found a number of products that are great for moms, families, and were just plain cool. To read more about the trends for consumer electronics this year, be sure to read my first article on CES entitled Top 6 Tech Product Trends of CES 2010. In this article I list my top 4 favorite products for moms that are very innovative and new.

#1 The Zomm

Your cell phone on a leash One of my favorite products from the show was the Zomm, heralded as a wireless leash for your cell phone. The Zomm was created by a mom and the Zomm initials stem from the first initial of each of her children. The Zomm is a keychain you attach to your keys that connects wirelessly, through Bluetooth, to your cell phone. Should you leave your house, a taxi cab, a restaurant, the gym, etc. without your phone, the Zomm will set off an alarm to alert you that you are leaving the phone behind. In addition, the Zomm acts as a two-way microphone and speakerphone – so you no longer have to tear your purse apart looking for your phone to answer it. Simply click on the Zomm button to speak to your caller. Lastly, the Zomm acts as a personal alarm. Press the panic button to immediately dial 911 through your phone if you are in an emergency. Very simple, but pure brilliance. The Zomm will be available for purchase during the second quarter of 2010. Estimated price is $79.99 with no monthly charges.

#2 Lok8u

Another of my favorite products from CES 2010 was Lok8u nu-m8 (pronounced LocateU nu-mate). The Nu·m8 is a damage resistant, GPS enabled, colored watch that your child wears on his/her wrist allowing parents to know where their child is at any point in time. It’s intention is not to act as a wireless leash, but instead act as safety guard to ensure your child is traceable should s/he become abducted. The Nu·m8 was developed by a dad after frantically searching for his daughter who had disappeared from his sight for over 10 minutes (she had wandered next door to pet some horses). He knew there had to be a way to allow a child some independence while at the same time allowing for a sense of security and peace of mind for the parents. Parents can set up a wireless safe zone, say a border of 500 feet around their school, so that if a child leaves that border, they are automatically alerted via e-mail/text message. In addition, the watch was designed to be tamper resistant. Should the watch be removed, an e-mail/text message will be sent to the parent. Parents can check the location of their child anytime simply by texting ‘wru’ to Nu·m8 . The GPS locator is accurate within 10 feet. The Nu·m8 is available in pink, blue, and black and recommended for children ages 3-12 years old. Nu·m8 requires a $10 monthly subscription to Lok8u’s Pinpoint Services to access the location requests and retails online for $180 at BestBuy.com, RadioShack.com, Toys R Us.com, Sears.com, and at lok8u.com. Other GPS locator products coming out soon include Maxell’s KeySmart and XactTrax.

Top 6 Tech Product Trends of CES 2010

by Lori Cunningham

As many of you know, last week I visited the largest International Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Vegas. The Las Vegas Convention Center, with its 2.3 million square feet of space, was packed full of companies showcasing their latest technology products from all over the world. In addition, CES spread out into the Las Vegas Hilton and part of the Venetian. I’m telling you, this was one BIG show. CES reported today that over 120,000 people were in attendance. I believe it because the walkways were very crowded, making it hard to get around to see everything.

I tackled the show in four ways:

1. Attending Press conferences: I attended the press conferences of the largest companies (Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Sanyo, Samsung, etc.) to see firsthand some of their new products and the technologies they were promising for 2010.

2. Walking the Showroom Floor: Daily I walked the floor talking to companies and seeing demos of mom tech and family tech gadgets and software. I also arranged to review some of these products later in the year so I can give a thorough analysis on how these technologies can help you as a mom.

For the remainder of this article and the top 6 trends of CES 2010, please visit the official WellConnectedMom.com website.

Windows 7 Review: Useful Features

This article is part two of a three part series reviewing Windows 7. The first article, “Windows 7 Review: Media Center,” reviews the benefits of Media Center and it’s potential to share pictures, movies, TV shows, and videos on computers and TVs throughout the house. This article will further explain why Windows 7 is a valuable upgrade from Windows Vista or XP as it contains plenty of features that make it much more efficient to find things and get things done more effectively. Finding things is now a breeze with the Start Menu Search box. The new taskbar helps me keep track of all of my open windows and it’s easier than ever to go directly to the window I am looking for. The Jump Lists I use extensively. And the Snipping Tool – well, that’s the bomb! To find out what these features are, you can find them easily below. For those of you who want a more thorough review, I have briefly discussed many of the larger new features of Windows 7 here.

But the fun doesn’t stop here. In the next article of my Windows 7 Review series, I will show you how Windows 7 handles Photos and Videos which are very important families. For those of you who are photo and video enthusiasts, you’ll be very pleased with some of the new features Microsoft has included in Windows 7.

Windows 7 is actually tighter and lighter than its operating system predecessors. This is an amazing feat for Microsoft. This was accomplished by unbundling some of the programs that were bundled with Windows Vista, such as Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Contacts, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Microsoft Agent, and a few more.

Many people did not use these programs, so Microsoft simply removed them from Windows 7. However, for those people who did like these programs, Microsoft has made them available through a simple install called “Windows Live Essentials.” I highly recommend this install, for the Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker are “essentials” for those of you who love digital photography and videography. Photos and videos are the subject of Part 3 of my Windows Review series, which will come out shortly.

Windows 7 is chockfull of useful features, you’ll never go back to a previous operating system. To continue reading this article please go to our new location, WellConnectedMom.com.

Windows 7 Review: Media Center

I recently hosted a Windows 7 house party to show the new features and benefits of the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. As Windows 7 has just launched, there is a lot of buzz around it. All new computers are either bundled with Windows 7 or there is a promise to give you a free upgrade. Is Windows 7 just another highly marketed upgrade or is it worth your serious attention? If you’re not buying a new computer, is upgrading to Windows 7 really going to help you much? In a three part series, I will take you through some of the compelling reasons why you should consider Windows 7.

This first article will focus on Windows Media Center. Most computers with Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems have Media Center on them. Yet, many people have never opened Media Center on their computer. Today is the day you’ll open this great program up, if you haven’t already. Media Center has a wealth of multimedia entertainment just waiting to be used. With Media Center you can access your favorite music, pictures, and videos. In addition, if you have a TV tuner and a coaxial connection from your TV provider, you can record live TV – it is a fully functional DVR.

Personalized Radio: You're the DJ And it's Free!

Wouldn’t you love to create your own radio station where you choose the music for a change? Ipods are perfect for this but sometimes it’s nice to have a little variety and a surprise as to what song is coming next. Pandora Internet Radio might be just what you’re looking for. Pandora Radio is the largest online music website with nearly 30,000 registered subscribers and a database of over 600,000 songs. 1

Although Pandora has a huge song database, it’s not just about serving up songs you want to listen to. Pandora is created around the idea of categorizing songs. Songs are categorized not by their genre, but by over 400 different musical attributes, which are combined together to create larger categories called focus traits. Pandora has over 2,000 of these focus traits; examples of which include syncopation, key tonality, vocal harmonies, and instrumental proficiency. When you choose a song or artist, Pandora will then match up other songs which have similar focus traits to create an individualized radio listening experience for you.

The Beauty of Pandora
Pandora allows you to create your own radio stations. Pandora radio stations are a stream of personalized music based on one or more artists or song titles. To begin, first register with Pandora. Registration is free.

Radio stations are easy to create – just click on the button called “Create a New Station.” Then enter a song or artist. Based on what you input, an entire radio station will be created around it. Drawing from the 2,000 focus traits database, Pandora will develop a playlist for you which will include other songs from the same artist and songs from other artists that are similar. Furthermore, your radio station will always be easily available to you every time you log on to Pandora. It won’t take long before you find yourself creating numerous radio stations. Pandora will allow you to create up to 100 stations. I’ve created many stations around my favorite artists from today, the 80’s, and 70’s. Dependent upon your mood, your personalized radio is ready to go at a “click’s” notice.

Customize Your Station
Your radio station is completely unique – you can rate each song with a “Thumbs up” or “Thumbs down.” If you rate the song a “Thumbs up”, the following songs will have traits similar to this song and all “Thumbs up” songs will play more frequently. A “Thumbs down” means you do not want to hear that song again and the song will immediately stop, be deleted from playing in the future, and a new song will play. Another option is to click on the Menu button (between the “Thumbs up” and “Thumbs down” buttons) and click on “I’m tired of this song.” The song will be retired from all your stations for one month. To skip a song for the present listening period, click on the skip button, right next to the play/pause button. Doing so will not judge whether you like the song or not.

Running out of ideas for radio stations? No problem. Pandora also allows you to choose music based on genre:

Choosing a genre allows you to get a great variety of music from a many artists that you might not run across from your personalized radio stations. And the genres are pretty well defined. For example, I selected Rock and was given the following sub genres below.

For Holiday genre, there are over 10 categories for Christmas songs. Christmas in October – it’s never too early to blast Christmas songs, is it?

About This Music

There’s more to Pandora besides the tunes. If you click on “About This Music,” you’ll see more options to learn more about the artist you are listening to.

Click on Artist to learn more about the artist.

Clicking on Album is a really cool feature – it will show you the names of all the songs on the album along with a demo of each song.

Clicking on Song will give you a description of the attributes Pandora chose for this song. You can also purchase the song here if you’d like.

The Lyrics tab will take you to the lyrics to the song playing – so now you can sing along. However, if you’re in the office, you might want to wait until you get home.

Lastly, the Fans tab will show you other fans who like the song you’re listening to. You can actually connect with them and leave them a message. Fans unite!

On the Go?
Good news! If you have a web enabled phone, you can take Pandora with you. Listen to it in your car, in the office, while working out or walking, waiting in the dentist office (with headphones of course), etc. Go to http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go/ to learn more.

My Squeeze on Pandora
Pandora is not the holy grail. But it povides an interesting path to enjoy your favorite music. Here are some of the pro’s and con’s I found regarding Pandora…..

Pros:

you receive personalized song service because you can “Thumbs up” or” Thumbs down” what you don’t like.

you discover new songs or even old songs you hadn’t thought about in years.

you can learn more about your favorite artists in songs by revewing the Artist, Album, Song, and Lyrics section under About This Music. I am surprised at how they lyrics actually say in some of my old favorites.

by creating many different radio stations, dependendent upon your mood, you can jump right into the right mood music right away

if you don’t know the artist name but you know the song, Pandora will likely find the artist for you.

Cons:

you can’t hear a song you’re dying to hear right away. Pandora’s music licenses actually don’t allow them to play a particular song on demand. In fact, within a three hour period, you won’t hear more than 4 songs from a particular artist.

you can’t rewind or replay any song again.

you can receive 40 hours of Pandora music for free but then the music simply stops unless you upgrade your subscription ($36/yr). If you really want to hear more music for the rest of the month without subscripion, you can pay $.99 for unlimited music the rest of tht month. You will receive 40 more hours once the new month turns.

Reception can somtimes be bad on your mobile phone depending on your location.

Overall, I love Pandora! It’s better than a CD – you have more variety. It’s better than the radio or Internet radio because I can give immediate feedback as to whether or not I like the song. If I don’t like it, I “Thumbs down” it and it’s gone. It’s better than an Ipod because I get variety and suspense as to what is going to play next. Pandora “gets” me. And hey, it’s free! So go check it out for yourself and enjoy! Rock on! http://pandora.com/.

What Is The Digital Age? A Must See Video!

WOW!!! This is a fascinating 2009 video, that really puts in perspective how technology is evolving and has become a vital part of our daily lives. We have heard that Facebook, My Space, and You Tube have tremendous followings, but did you know each month 250 million unique visitors visit these sites, compared to only 10 million unique visitors who visit the ABC, CBS, and NBC sites? People are seeking the ability to view original videos, to see them at the time they prefer, and be able to forward the link to their friends easily for discussion.

More video was uploaded to You Tube in the past two months than if ABC, CBS, and NBC has been airing content 24/7/365 since 1948! Technological advances are happening at incredible speed. You can’t afford to ignore the changes occuring worldwide with regards to technology. Your childrens’ future is being laid out today. How s/he can adapt to tecnological changes now relates directly to how adept s/he will be in the workforce as an adult.

Take 5 minutes and watch this video – there’s a reason why its been viewed over 468,000 times…. since September 19th. Please forward this link to your friends to get them up to speed too.

eBooks Review: Wizz-e.com

In my previous post on online eBooks, I discussed the benefits of reading and including eBooks as another method to enhance a child's reading time and further elevate reading as a fun and engaging time to learn. In preparing for this post, I visited several free online eBooks websites to see what is currently available.
For the most part, the better free eBook websites offer a story where:
  • the pages change once you click on the next button or right arrow key
  • they have colorful graphics
  • a voice reads the story for you
The stories are often entertaining but not too long in length. There are also numerous kids eBook retailers on the web. I wondered, "are their offerings much better than the free eBook resources out there?" I found an opportunity to review Wizz-e.com's website and read a number of their eBooks. Wizz-e.com is owned by EBooks4Kidz Ltd. EBooks4Kidz, Ltd. Is an electronic eBook publisher, so their focus is on producing high quality eBooks - unlike the traditional paper book process that is bogged down with inefficiencies and long timelines. Their sole dedication to eBooks is evident in how they have crafted their storybooks.

I have to say I was impressed with their offerings of eBooks. Although they don't have a huge collection of eBooks (they have 29 books currently), they offer a good variety of books for children 3 to 8 years of age. I sat down at the computer with my six and three year olds and we read/watched several books together. My kids were instantly intrigued with the familiar stories like "The Three Little Pigs" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." They were eager to see their favorite stories "come alive" on the computer. I have to admit, I was skeptical as to whether the books would capture their attention throughout the whole story.

As we listened to the story, my daughter began doodling. Just as I worried, although sitting on my lap, she felt the freedom to multitask at the desk. I allowed her to doodle for a little bit then I decided to change the option of having the book read to us to her reading the book. She read the pages to her brother and I. My daughter is a first grader, but is a good reader - due to the fact, I believe, that we began reading to her daily at six months old. She was able to read most words of the book, however, as there were many words on the page, she grew tired of reading. We compromised by allowing her to read a page and let the voice read the next page. We do the same routine with longer paper books during our nightly routine. My daughter enjoyed clicking on the next buttons and clicking on the words she didn't know to hear how they are pronounced. To my amazement, my son paid attention the entire time.

At the end of each story there is an interactive quiz which questions kids not only the content of the story but also the sequence of it. Each quiz consists of five questions. Despite my daughter's doodling, she answered all five questions correctly. After we were done reading, I looked more closely at my daughter's doodles. She had written a summary from both books:

My daughter's doodles. The first one is her summary of the "Three Little Pig"s
and the second one is her summery of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" - "They are Bad,
They ate her." In this Goldilocks story, the bears do end up eating Goldilocks.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw in her doodle.

The next day my son was eager to hear more eBooks. In particular, he wanted his familiar stories, The Three Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After reading his two favorites, we ventured off into new storylines. I loved the book "When I Don't Want to Sleep." What a fantastic book! The illustrations are very graphically appealing and the animations are very cute. The storyline is clever and imaginative. It is fun to read with its rhyming and ability to excite your child of all that awaits them after s/he falls asleep.
The animations on the pages were cute and the kids liked re-watching some of the scenes. It was good for the kids to hear a different voice reading them a book too - with different tones and intonations. The books are read by a British woman or a British man so it gave us a chance to talk about accents and how they differ from ones in the US.

"It's way past your bedtime" they [parents] always say
But then they tell me I can still play…
Because in my dreams I can play in my head!
But only if I am asleep in my bed.

Wizz-e has a good variety of familiar and new stories available on their site. eBooks can be purchased from anywhere to $1.99 to $8.99 with most books falling between $2.99 to $4.99. My favorite book, "When I Don't Want to Sleep," is regularly priced at $8.99 but is now on special for $1.99. To buy the book you have two options:
  1.  Save it under "My Books" under your login so that no matter where you are, you can access the book online to read over and over again.
  2. Download it to your computer so you do not need Internet access to view your book. If you choose this option, download it to your laptop so when you travel, your kids can view the book as often as they like. In the purchasing contract, it states that you are permitted to download the book to a single computer and may not transfer it to other computers or users. So be sure you download it to the computer that will be used the most by your kids.
Benefits of Wizz-e Compared to Free eBooks

  • higher illustrations quality

  • larger display on the screen

  • gives option to change volume right on the book screen

  • good graphics and sound when "turning the page" of the book

  • interactive quiz at the book ensures child is paying attention and prepares them for online tests at school

  • flexibility to download onto a laptop to take on trips with you- provides better learning possibilities and interaction for kids rather than just DVD movies

  • fast loading time for each book and page

Opportunities for Wizz-e to Improve Upon
  • more voices - of the six eBooks I tested, it seemed as if only two voices are reading all the books. Variety and different intonations of voice makes eBooks more interesting for kids
  • interactivity - more interactivity can be created by highlighting various objects that perform different actions if clicked. For example, click on the lamp and the light turns on or off
  • more books - they've got a great start already on a variety of books - keep that library going!
My "Squeeze" on Wizz-e.com

Wizz-e.com is a delightful and entertaining site to explore eBooks which my children were interested in. Their eBooks had wonderful illustrations, interesting storylines, and cute animations that seem to make the book come alive. Wizz-e.com's eBooks not only captured my kids' attention, but helped them to retain the story and its sequence in their minds - as confirmed by their correct answers at the quiz at the end of each story.

As I wrote in my post, "Kids' Online eBooks: Don't Overlook Their Importance," the future of our children's education will be rooted in technology. Our kids are a part of the "Digital Generation." There is a reason why they can figure out how to change the ring-tone on your phone leaving you hostage with that ring-tone until they change it back. Kids love technology because they find it engaging, it allows them to self-direct their learning at their pace, they can be creative with it, and it's very empowering. They can use technology at new levels that aren't possible in their normal lives.

Tying your child's love for books with their growing interest in technology is a match made in heaven. There's no doubt in my mind that education will move to eBooks and online tests as funds and further software development are made available. Do what you can now to empower your child for their future.

Happy reading!

Lori

Kids Online eBooks: Don't Overlook Their Importance

Importance of Reading

Reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare your child for school. The foundation for instilling early learning success begins as a baby. The sooner you begin reading regularly to your baby the better off s/he will be. Reading to your baby helps in the following ways:

o develops a closeness between the parent and child
o elevates the importance of books to children in a fun way
o is great for setting up a bedtime routine that the baby will eventually recognize and follow
o helps growing babies to understand how books work with pictures and turning pages
o is a fun activity involving interaction between the book, child, and parent

As a baby gets older, s/he has learned to look forward to this time of closeness and adventure. Reading books helps children to understand the alphabet, communication through print, and the characteristics of written language.1 By the time the child reaches two, children who have been read to regularly show better language understanding, have larger vocabularies, and show higher cognitive abilities than other children. 2 Furthermore, continued parent-child reading during the preschool leads to increased reading achievement in elementary school and an increased enthusiasm for reading and learning.3

Reading eBooks Online

The best place for a child to learn how to read is in your lap with a book. There is no better first learning experience than this. However, as your child gets older, exposing him/her to other reading mediums can be very valuable. The Internet is full of games, coloring pages, videos, and e-books where your child can enhance his/her reading ability. Age three and higher is recommended for children using the Internet. Their cognitive abilities are more operable as well as their potential in maneuvering the mouse.

Reading eBooks is beneficial because they:
o provide children with an interactive experience though sound, movement, turning pages, etc.
o enhance the reading experience by hearing different voices read to them
o improve hand-eye coordination as they follow the screen and click the previous and next page buttons 4
o help initiate kids to the computer – where they will be spending most of their time in the future
o often provide a twist on a familiar story making an old story new again
o prepare children for the very possible future of online libraries – which will compliment physical libraries but
provide more convenience and a 24/7 experience
o “bring added dimensions to the learning environment when used in an appropriate context.” 5

You may have read about the popularity of eReaders. Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s eReader are the big players in this market. These readers can hold a lot of books and the clarity of the print they project is pretty amazing. It really does seem as if you’re reading an actual printed book. Nonetheless, their future growth is unpredictable – much like GPS systems. These stand alone devices can become inconvenient when a person needs to tote around their laptop, GPS, E-Reader, cell phone, etc. The future is in multi-bundled devices – such as the iPhone.

With the advent of the touch screen, there are numerous possibilities for books and how children interact with them. Children are being raised with computers, Gameboys, Nintendo DS’s, playing with their parents iPhone or cell phones, etc. They love playing with these gadgets. Why not enhance their reading experience with the interactivity and entertainment these devices provide children? It’s the best of both worlds. iPhones and other multimedia phones can already hold thousands of mp3’s and pictures – eBooks are the next logical step.

Interactive eBooks are sure to be big due to:

o their instant accessibility (once downloaded)
o condensed format – no more lugging heavy books around
o convenience – whether stretching out on the sofa or sitting on a plane – you can now read anywhere
o entertainment value to kids
o increases kids’ independence if the eBook has audio narration – the whole story can be read or the child can click on single unknown words
o multimedia experience – increasing learning through sight, sound, and interactivity with theclick of a mouse
o some eBooks offer online quizes after the book is over to help children with their reading comprehension. This is key because it helps prepare children for education standards later in their schooling. They will be tested not on how well they read but on how well they understand what they read.

My SQUEEZE on eBooks:

I highly recommend engaging your child in eBooks and online activity. However, in no way do I advise allowing eBooks to replace the traditional book reading experience. eBooks offer a new exciting way for kids to enjoy books and interact with them in a way that is not possible with traditional books.

At my little girl’s school, they utilize an Accelerated Reader (AR) program which assesses whether or not a child has read a book. AR is a progress monitoring software assessment tool used by primary and secondary schools for monitoring the practice of reading.6 It helps teachers assess their students’ comprehension rates and grade reading level. AR is used by more than 75,000 schools nationwide. My daughter reads books at home and then takes her AR test the next day at school. She is already learning to use the computer to take quizes on the books she reads. She started taking these tests in Kindergarten! When I took my GRE (Graduate Records Examination) test to enter graduate school - nearly 10 years ago – it was all computer based – which included reading comprehension. There’s no doubt in my mind that our children will read more things and be evaluated online as technology progresses.

If you’d like to pursue eBooks further, here are some links for you to view. I noticed that most free sites are limited in their offerings and interactivity. Nonetheless, they provide for a good introduction to reading eBooks online.

o StarFall - Short stories for beginning readers
o StarFall – Beginners - online text with audio or emerging readers
o BBC Childrens stories Popular kids shows in England

I have recently been given the opportunity to review a children’s eBook retailer online. Stay tuned. I will be posting my review of their site shortly.

Remember, reading to your children – or having them read themselves – is an important daily habit to continue. Experts recommend a minimum of 15 minutes a day. Fifteen minutes a day can pay big dividends for a lifetime of learning. Enjoy this reading time with your kids, they grow so fast, as you already know.

Front Loading Washer & Dryers: Is it Time to Upgrade?

For the past five years or so, high efficiency  (H.E.) front loading washers have been all the rage.  Not only do they look neat with all the digital features, they're cool with new colors - red, blue, silver -- never seen before in our hum-drum laundry rooms.  Things are looking up!

As a technology lover, I figured it must be time to upgrade, right?  Who could pass up all those bells and whistles and futuristic style?  But before I can shell out a sizable chunk of money for these beauties, I must do my homework first.  So I surfed the web and talked to my friends who have high efficiency front loading machines.    Here's what I found out...

What is a High Efficiency Front Loading Washer?
First off, what is a H.E. front loading washer?  Most are front loading washers like the type you'd see in a laundromat.  They are characterized by: 3

A Rotating Drum that tumbles clothes through less water.  This compared to a top loader which rubs clothes against an agitator in a tub full of water.

A High Pressure Spray Rinsing that saves water and helps get soap out of clothes.

A faster Spin Cycle that cuts down on water and causes clothes to be "drier" out of the washer.

A More Efficient Motor and Automatic Sensing that conserves water and energy.

Top Loading Machines
Top loading machines are the most common type of washing machines.  Laundry is deposited and withdrawn from the top of the machine.  Top loading machines are best for people who have back problems as it's easier to get to the load without bending or kneeling over.  These machines are less costly and tend to be more reliable.   I've had mine now for nearly 15 years and it keeps on ticking.  My mom had hers for over 25 years.  So why "throw in the towel (and my socks too!)" and upgrade my laundry machines now?    Let's delve further into high efficiency front loading machines.

H.E. Front Loading High Efficiency Machines
H.E. Front Loading machines have been around enough now that there is ample information available on their benefits and drawbacks:
BENEFITS:

Save Money - these machines use far less water and electricity than top loading machines.  H.E. machines only fill up partially with water.  They lift the clothes up and drop them back into the water, instead of totally emerging them in water as do top loaders.

Studies show that H.E. machines use up to 50% less water and 50-65% less energy than top loading machines. 5  The U.S. Department of Energy calculates savings of up to $50 a year in utility costs. 3  A $100 a year savings in utility costs is even possible with the best energy efficient machines as compared to your old 15 year old top loading washing machine. 3

Load Capacity - most H.E. machines can handle more clothes with capacities ranging from 12-20 pound loads.

Cleaner Laundry - because of their tumbling and drop action, they can clean clothes more fully.  Reports from consumer reports, CNET reviews, and interviews with friends confirm clothes are cleaner.

Drier Clothes Out of the Washer - due to moisture extraction in the spin cycle. This also aids with reduced energy consumption.  Drier clothes from the washer mean less time for clothes to dry, which equates energy consumption reduction.

Good for the Environment - due to less energy consumption and water usage.  A family of four could reduce their water usage by up to 8,0000 gallons a year using H.E. machines. 4

Stackable - Front loaders can be stacked, making more for space in smaller laundry rooms.

Home Network Integration - believe it or not, models such as the LG SteamWasher can be integrated into your home network and can show you the washer's progress on your computer!  Cool!  Sign me up!

High Capacity - purchasing a large capacity H.E. machine will allow you to double the amount of clothes you can put into the washer.  My friend, who has a family of 5, is able to wash all the bed linens in one load -- a feat not even thought possible with her top loader.

NOTE on Detergent:  High Efficiency (H.E.) machines work best with low-foaming, high-efficiency detergent which is made specifically for H.E. machines.  These detergents are formulated for low water levels and tumbling action.  H.E. detergents are comparable in price to normal detergents.  Using regular detergents in H.E. machines creates too many suds which will make it harder to get the soap out of the clothes.

DRAWBACKS:

Vibration - some H.E. models vibrate excessively during the spin cycle.  It depends where you place your washing machine.  If you place it on concrete, the vibration will be pretty much absorbed.  However, putting it on a wood framed floor will cause the vibrations to be more noticeable.  Newer models include reduced vibration features.

You Snooze you Lose - if you forget to put something in the washer after you pressed the start button - the item is going to have to wait until the next laundry load. The door locks so that water doesn't pour out onto your floor.

Digital Breakdowns - some of the higher end models use digital screens which allow you to customize your washing experience.  However, digital components can break down or be confusing and this can greatly decrease your front loader experience.  Repairing digital components can be costly.

Mold Growth - there have been numerous complaints about strange odors coming from these machines.  H.E. machines harbor moisture which promotes mold growth, hence the noticeable smell.  Mold growth can be prevented by leaving the washer door open after a load is done and through a little preventative maintenance.  To decrease the presence of mold, add 3/4 cup of bleach to your white laundry cycle to remove any build up in the machine. 4

Run Time - H.E. machines tend to take longer - expect at least one hour for the wash to be completed.  Expect 1 1/2 hours for the special allergen cycles.

  Important Features
When shopping for a H.E. front loading machine, here are some features to keep in mind:

o     ENERGY STAR - ensure your washer is ENERGY STAR - which means the government has declared it to be an energy efficient appliance.  While ENERGY STAR does not label dryers, be sure to choose one with a moisture sensor so that the machine will automatically shut off once the clothes are dry.

o     Capacity - determine the size of washer needed ahead of time.  A larger family points to a larger capacity needed.

o     Several Water Level Options - or Automatic water Level Sensing.  Water level options allow you to reduce water usage by adjusting water to the size of your load.

o     Yellow Energy Guide Label
Choose a model with a high Modified Energy Factor (MEF) and a low Water Factor (WF).  This is a valuable tool in determining how much energy it takes to use the machine and how it ranks compared to other models.  The label also provides an estimate of annual operating costs.

o     High Spin Speeds - helps to wring out the water from the clothes before going into the dryer.

o     Steam - steaming your clothes rather than washing them is more efficient as it loosens up dirt and freshens up and sanitizes clothes.  Steaming clothes also reduces water usage as the tub is not filled with water.  Both washers and dryers can offer this feature, but not all models offer steam. 2

o  Quiet - front loaders are amazingly quiet.  Yes, you still hear them but you'll notice a big reduction in volume.  Also, because front loaders balance the load better, you won't hear that loud banging noise like you do with top loaders when the laundry load becomes unbalanced.

Delayed Start - washing machines have now joined the fray of delayed starts just like their oven and dishwasher counterparts.  With some models, you can set your H.E. machine to begin washing a load at a certain hour.  You can start it at 4am to be ready for the dryer by the time you awake, which reduces the amount of time wet laundry sits in the washer.

Allergy Clean - some models offer a special high temperature cycle designed to reduce certain allergens.  It helps to reduce dust mite populations and is particularly useful for bedding and pillows.

Automatic dispensers - fill up the dispensers with detergent, fabric softener, and bleach to automatically dispense at the right time.  This is HUGE for people used to top loaders.  With a top loader, many of us put the detergent in first, then fill the tub with water, then put the clothes in.  This takes a good amount of time and you need to be around to complete the steps.  Not so with a front loader.  The front loader takes in the detergent along with water and ensures the detergent is thoroughly mixed before combining it with the clothes.

Extra Rinse Cycle - for those people who are extra sensitive to detergent being in their clothes.

o  Pedestal with Bottom Drawer - pedestals can be purchased separately for approximately $250 each to make it easier to reach inside your washer and provide for extra storage.  As pedestals are hollow inside, they will not help much against a heavily vibrating machine.  Some people build platforms out of wood or concrete to add height to their washer and dryer rather than purchase pedestals.

My "Squeeze" On It
Although H.E. front loading machines are very pricey, in the long run they will pay for themselves by lowering your gas/electricity and water bills.  They cause much less wear and tear on your clothes and will clean your clothes more fully.

The features I feel are most important are:

  • Capacity - buy as large capacity as you can afford
  • Steam - to help cut down your dry cleaning bill
  • Allergy Clean - to keep bed linens and pillows dustmite free
  • Delayed Start - this can change the way, or at least the time, you do your laundry
  • High MEF and Low WF - a high modified energy factor and low water factor machine will save more money in the long run.
Lastly, a word about color.  As fancy and as cool as a red washer looks, it will set you back at least an extra $100.  Instead, add some color to your laundry room walls to spice things up.
